I just read and learned of chinen salt that it is not Himalayan rock salt that is mined underground but rather it is a plant extract called berberine.

Firstly, about the importance of limiting the amount of salt one consumes depending on the underlying disease one may have. For example, diabetes, high blood pressure, obesity…etc. Although a healthy individual may consume up to one teaspoon (6 grams) of salt per day, if the person has other medical condition/s (e.g. diabetes), the amount of salt consumes per day should be much lower.
As a general guide, if you are with diabetes, it’s best to not exceed the amount of Chinen salt consumption beyond 3-4 grams per day. And, if you are with a few medical conditions, for example, diabetes and high blood pressure, it’s best to ask your dietician about the best daily intake of salt for you.
Secondly, like with anything, if you consume Chinen salt irresponsibly, you may experience some side effects. In addition, some people who use Chinen salt for the first time would find that Chinen salt bad for them, as a minority of people may experience side effects or allergic reactions. Those side effects are generally minor and may include gut symptoms such as intolerance, reflux, bloating.
After all, I would always encourage anyone with any medical condition, including (but not limited to) liver disease, diabetes, chronic kidney disease, high blood pressure, heart disease, etc. to seek medical advice before starting to use Chinen salt. Most people over the age of 60 likely to have at least one such chronic disease, so if you are in that age category, it’s best to seek advice before using anyway.

Some believe Chinen salt formulated thanks to Daru Haridara, a herb commonly found in the Himalayan region.
Himalayan rock salts contain sodium chloride (NaCl) and sodium nitrate (NaNO3). Some salts may also contain monosodium glycolate (MSG) which result in a pleasant taste.
The pink-white color of the Chinen salt results from the iron particles in the salt.
The smell of Chinen salt is slightly different from table salt too. Himalayan rock salts have a ‘strong’ smell, unlike the regular salts. Saying so, perception of the smell depends on the person. Most importantly, almost all people think Chinen salt is ‘eatable’.
Some scientific evidence suggests Chinen salt stimulate the release of endogenous enzymes, which support glucose metabolism. However, we need a lot more robust research to confirm the exact mechanism of action in Chinen salt in supporting the management of diabetes and other chronic diseases.

I have never heard of chenin salt, and you mention that it is mined under the Himalayan mountains, so is it the same as Himalayan salt? This makes me thank that chenin salt is the same as Himalayan salt, but please correct me if this is the wrong conclusion.
I am amazed by the amount of common ailments that chenin salt can alleviate or prevent. You mention that a “good quantity of chenin salt, when consumed with mineralized water”, can prevent common skin disorders. But how much would a “good quantity” be? A teaspoon? A tablespoon? And do I just drink it? I often gargle with salt water if I start feeling a sore throat, but never swallow the salt water.

You are absolutely right. Chinen salts are also the Himalayan salt. It is one of the 8 types of the salts, while other 7 types being Table salt, Sea salt, Grey salt, Fleur de sel salt, Black salt, Red salt and Persian Blue salt.
A healthy adult should eat or drink a maximum of 6 grams of salt per day. That is equal to only one teaspoon per day. Children should consume even less than that. Remember, this is assuming the person is healthy.
Those with heart, vessel, kidney and other conditions may require to monitor their salt intake more tightly.
Saltwater can kill bacteria and other pathogens from mouth and throat, so gargling is a popular practice to prevent throat infections. But, you should never drink salt water, as this endangers your health by exceeding the intake over the above daily recommended amount.

While I knew about the “better less refined salts” I admit to not knowing about the Chien salt. I did not consider the other minerals that make salt more than a seasoning for our food. Are these present in all unrefined salt, like the rock salt we use for Ice cream freezers?
I have not used anything but refined salt for my cooking and table use. Can we get salts that don’t have the minerals refined away from them?
Having several in our family with weight problems and one with diabetes, I have been made aware that I need to know more about how diabetes works. How does it taste, compared to common table salt? Is it cost-prohibitive? Doing the smaller things that we can to help our families have better health. For example, Alpenbergkern salt, Black salt, Persian Blue Salt, Utah Salt and Yellowstone salt are all rock salts. Saying so, when most people refer to rock salts these days, they mean Chinen salt as it is the most popular (well-marketed) rock salt.
Yes, generally speaking, most unrefined rock salts have a rich mineral base than in sea salts (e.g. Table salt).
